Tourism in Bagerhat


Bagerhat District is a district in South-western Bangladesh. It is a part of the Khulna Division.
Geography:
Bagerhat district has a total area of 3959.11 square kilometres. It is bounded by Gopalganj District and Narail District on the north, The Bay of Bangla, on the south, Gopalganj District , Pirojpur District & Barguna District on the east and Khulna District ,on the west. Main rivers of the district are Panguchi, Daratana, Madhumati ,Pasur River, Haringhata, Mongla River, Baleswar, Bangra and Goshairkhali.
Bagerhat (Town) has an area of 7.53 sq. km and a population of 51504; male 52.24%, female 47.76%. It consists of 9 wards and 31 mahallas. Bagerhat municipality was established in 1958. Ithe literacy rate among the town people is 59.1%. The town has one dakbungalow and one circuit house.
History:
Now it is the 4th largest city in Bangladesh
Khan Jahan Ali  was the founder of many of the settlements in the district, he settled here in 1429, accompanied by many soldiers under his command. Khan Jahan Ali was the founder of the Khalifabad Pargana which included the areas Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira, Jessore and Barisal. Ali was the ruler of the Pargana from 1429 till his death in 1459. Following his death, the region came under the rule of Maharaja Pratapadita.
During Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, thePakistan Army entered the area on 21 April, according to Banglapedia  the Army killed about 200 people at Khalishakhali and Babuganj. There were also many mass killings in Doyapara, Shakharikarihat, and at Chakulia of Mollahat. Along with that, 35 people died in a battle in Morelganj between the pro-independence Mukit Bahini and pro-Pakistani Razakar militia.
Literacy and educational institutions:
Average literacy 44.33%; male 49.54%, female 34.33%. Educational institutions: medical college 1, physical education college 1, homeopath college 1, technical college 5, PTI 1, vocational institutions 1, government college 3, non-government college 28, government high school 4, non-government high school 185, junior school 33, mentally retarded school 1, government primary school 521, non-government primary school 338, madrasa 475, satellite school 14, community school 9.
Economy:
One of the two ports of Bangladesh,Mongla, is here. Rampal and Fakirhat, two upazilla of Bagerhat is known as Qwait of Bangladesh due to its huge production of shrimp and earning a lot of foreign exchange.(55%)

                                         Sixty Dome Mosque bagarhat
Places of interest:
The Sixty Dome Mosque more commonly known as Shait Gumbad Mosque or Saith Gunbad Masjid is the largest historical mosque in Bangladesh and one of the most impressive Muslim architectural structures on the Indian Subcontinent. It is located in Bagerhat in southern Bangladesh.
The mosque was built by Khan Jahan Ali in the 15th century and has walls of unusually thick, tapered brick in the Tughlaq style and a hut-shaped roofline that anticipates later styles. There are over seventy low domes while the interior is divided into many aisles and bays by slender columns which culminate in numerous arches that support the roof.
The mosque is decorated mostly with terracotta and bricks.
